The body was discovered around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, near Route 46, after two fishermen reported seeing it in the water, Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll announced Thursday, March 27.
Montville police officers responded to the area and recovered the body with assistance from the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit. The deceased was turned over to the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office, officials said.
The man had no identification on him, according to authorities.
The medical examiner determined the deceased was a male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, 166 pounds, and believed to be Black or mixed race, between 20 and 35 years old.
He has two identifying tattoos:
- One across his chest reading “Toolie”
- Another on his lower left arm that reads “for those I love I will sacrifice”
As of Wednesday, March 26, the cause and manner of death were still pending, but officials said “the cause of death is not suspected to be criminal.” Scans showed no projectiles or foreign objects in the body.
This remains an active investigation being led by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office CSI, and the Montville Police Department.
